Jahiliya, from the root jahala, has two meanings: jahala means at once being ignorant and violent. According to Imam Yassine, jahiliya means ignorance of the Creator and violence against the creatures. The Qur’ān gives jahiliya four facets: disbelief [Ẓan al-Jahiliya, 3:154], malgovernance [Ḥukm al-Jahiliya, 5:50], woman profligacy [Tabarruj al-Jahiliya, 33:33], and tribalism [Ḥamiyyat al-Jahiliya, 48:26].
