The ummah refers to the Muslim community worldwide. Former colonialism divided it into easily handled nation-states with artificial geographical borders. The secular military regimes took over the mission and guard the West’s strategic resources in return for having the latter’s protection. Now, the tables are starting to turn with the Arab Spring.
