By mūmin is meant not the ordinary muslim who performs the five pillars of Islam. To his observance of the five pillars of Islam the mūmin adds moral rectitude by perfecting his faith (imān) within a community that concurrently conducts a twofold jihad: one major against the self and one minor jihad against injustice. Such perfection can only be acquired through assimilating the Branches of imān altogether. Only then can they, men and women alike, aspire to spiritual excellence (iḥsān).
