– ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (God be pleased with him and his father) said: “A man came to the Prophet (God bless him and grant him peace) and said, ‘O Messenger of God, teach me some verses of the Qur’ān.’ He (God bless him and grant him peace) said, ‘Shall I teach you from the chapters that begin with Alif Lām Rā’ [e.g. Chapter 14, Chapter 15]?’ The man said [apologetically], ‘O Messenger of God, I have grown old, my heart has become tough and my tongue has grown stiff.’ God’s Messenger (God bless him and grant him peace) then said, ‘Shall I teach you from al-Musabbihāt?’ The man reiterated his apologetic remark, and said, ‘O Messenger of God, teach me a concise, comprehensive chapter.’ The Prophet then read the whole of Chapter 99. When he ended the chapter, the man turned away, saying, ‘By He Who has sent you with the Truth, I will add nothing to it [and I will never leave it]. He said that three times. God’s Messenger (God bless him and grant him peace) said, ‘He will be of the successful.’ He said that twice or three times.” Hadith narrated by al-Hākim in his mustadrak [multi-volume book compiling the Prophet’s hadiths]. He said: “Thehadith is authentic according to the norms set by al-Bukhāri and Muslim.”

– Ibn ‘Abbās (God be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (God bless him and grant him peace) said: “[The merit of] Chapter 99 equals that of the half of the Qur’ān.” Hadith narrated by al-Hākim (God have mercy upon him) in his mustadrak.

– ‘Ali (God be pleased with him) said: “God’s Messenger used to perform the last two-unit prayers [rak’atay ash-Shaf’] and the closing one-unit prayer [rak’at al-witr] of the Night Prayer [salāt al-Layl or al-Witr an-Nabawi] by reciting nine chapters from the mufassal [the ending chapters of the Qur’ān as of Chapter 49]. Aswad said, ‘he used to read Chapters 102, 97, and 99 in the first rak’a, Chapters 103, 110, and 108 in the second rak’a, and Chapters 109, 111 and 112 in the thirdrak’a.’” Hadith reported by Imam Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi (God have mercy upon them).
